West Ham players to make wage deferrals.
West Ham have become the second Premier League club to announce their players will defer part of their wages because of the coronavirus pandemic.

It follows a similar move from Southampton on Thursday.

Manager David Moyes, vice-chairman Karren Brady and finance director Andy Mollett will take a 30% pay cut.

Joint chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold and shareholders are putting £30m into the club.

West Ham say the payments will help retain jobs and allow them to pay 100% of non-playing staff salaries.

Premier League clubs previously said they would ask players to take a 30% pay cut in order to protect jobs.

However, the Professional Footballers' Association said that would hit tax contributions to the NHS.

Earlier this week, Premier League players launched the #PlayersTogether scheme to generate and distribute funds to the NHS.

In a statement, Brady said: “I would like to say a big thank you to David Moyes and his backroom team, our captain Mark Noble and our fantastic squad of players for the commitment and determination they have shown to offer their help and support.

‘’I would also like to thank the shareholders whose support through this injection of equity once again demonstrates their commitment to the future of the club.

“The joint-chairmen and I are truly proud of how they and everyone at the club has stepped up to play their part in this situation – we are in it together to support one another, our community and our club. That is the spirit of the West Ham United family.

“There is still a long and difficult road ahead but we remain committed to doing everything we can to support those most in need, and together we will come through it stronger.”

Noble added: "As players we have been in constant dialogue with the club since the situation around Covid-19 emerged and I am proud that our entire squad have made clear their strong desire to play our part in helping to support others through this situation."

So I was in error earlier
The owners are DEFERRING payments of interest to them not stopping accumulating & charging them.
No news of any rate change despite interest rates dropping to 0.1%

If the season restarts and the last 9 games are played and the club gets its tv money and match day revenue there is no reason why the players shouldn’t get their contracted income.
In the meantime the non playing staff are being protected and paid.
The players can do what they want with their own money as regards charities here or overseas (for foreign players) in the meantime.
Job done

Once the wage is deferred it can either be taken at a later date or not. I would suggest it’s all about seeing the full picture as it comes clear. Just like the virus itself.

I’m with the players on this, why should they take a wage cut just to line the pockets of billionaire owners?
The money won’t be going to a good cause, just saving some very rich people a few quid.

So, just deferring their huge wages to a later date. Wow thats big of them.

Re: West Ham players to make wage deferrals.
Loads of people have their own arrangements to give to charities of THEIR (not YOUR) choice.

A large number of them do so well away from the glare of publicity; in fact, if having your name smeared across the media was a condition of making a donation, I suspect a large part of charitable funding would simply dry up.

There's more to life than (15 minutes of) fame.

The players are protecting the jobs of the non playing staff & helping the club with their cash flow until the whole thing is resolved.
They don’t NEED to do that (are bankers etc doing that ?) and am sure many will give to the Players Together fund or other charities.
I understand Mark Noble has give £35,000 to a charity looking after vulnerable people in Basildon for example

Sportsmen are probably doing more than most (ie overseas players agreeing to rip up county cricket contracts, others agreeing to reductions or deferrals in many sports) with income they are entitled to.

It’s something I suppose. At least the club didn’t immediately try to sponge off the taxpayer when it didn’t have to.

Re: West Ham players to make wage deferrals.
Can ordinary people just defer taking their wages then? Big noisy gesture which will have very little impact on the players.

The players are 100% spot on.
They don't want to take a pay cut, because if they do that money goes into the owners pockets, nowhere else, and various owners - particularly those of the beaky cunts and the bin dippers- have already shown what they're all about.
They DO want to do their bit and want to be sure that the money they give goes to the right place.

In fairness the PFA have got a point about the tax.

That being said, fair play to all involved. It means the many at the club on normal salaries living month, to month still get paid.

So they're not taking a single penny in pay cuts, but instead just putting off receiving their full salary to a later date.
That's fucking big of them. Bunch of cunts the lot of them.

It’s a rights issue of shares and understand they are going to not take interest on the loans for now.
That should become permanent and the loans converted into shares.
Paying back the £18m they have stripped out in interest would be nice too.

More loans with a tidy interest rate?

Deferred rather than taking a pay cut?

Good, overpaying them anyway, most aren’t worth what they earn.
